Gaza Conflict Claims Lives of Over Thousand Athletes
Speaking at a press briefing, Asaad Al-Majdalawi noted that 45 of the victims were women. He detailed that of the 265 affected sports facilities, 184 were completely destroyed while 81 suffered partial damage.
“This destruction has deprived thousands of young people and adolescents of their right to train and practice sports,” Majdalawi said, stressing that the losses go beyond numbers, affecting athletes’ psychological wellbeing, social development, and professional opportunities, while also impacting income for many working in the sector.
The casualties and destruction have occurred despite a US-backed ceasefire that has been in place since Oct. 10, aimed at halting a two-year conflict that has claimed more than 72,000 lives—mostly women and children—and left over 171,000 injured. Since the ceasefire, Israeli forces have reportedly committed hundreds of violations through shelling and gunfire, killing 603 Palestinians and injuring 1,618, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
