Over Twenty Arrested at Amsterdam Protest Against Israeli Cantor

(MENAFN) Amsterdam authorities detained 22 pro-Palestinian demonstrators Sunday following protests targeting Shai Abramson, the Israeli military's chief cantor who performs liturgical compositions.

Approximately 200 activists gathered at Museumplein Square, positioned opposite the Concertgebouw concert hall, where they chanted against Abramson. Law enforcement officials apprehended 22 individuals on charges including fireworks possession, NOS reported.

Tensions escalated when officers confined demonstrators behind barriers to prevent them from leaving the square perimeter, sparking confrontations between authorities and protesters.

Under court-ordered restrictions, 30 activists received permission to stage a silent demonstration directly at the Concertgebouw, while organizers agreed to keep remaining protesters confined to Museumplein.

Earlier Sunday, a separate demonstration saw activists blockading two Concertgebouw entrance points, resulting in additional arrests by police.

Abramson was scheduled to headline the Concertgebouw's traditional Hannukah concert. The venue subsequently requested organizers substitute another performer—a demand they declined.

The Concertgebouw stated Abramson's participation was "at odds with the Concertgebouw's mission to connect people with music."
