Palestinian journalist lose his life in Gaza despite ceasefire

(MENAFN) A Palestinian journalist lost his life in an Israeli drone strike in southern Gaza on Tuesday, even as a ceasefire brokered under US President Donald Trump’s plan remains in effect.

Medical sources reported that Mahmoud Wadi, a photojournalist, was killed in central Khan Younis, a zone not controlled by Israel according to the ceasefire agreement.

Wadi’s father, Issam, described the strike as “an earthquake that struck the tent.” He added, "Mahmoud was photographing in a safe area (not under Israeli control according to the ceasefire agreement), but the Israelis respect no pledges or promises; their entire life is treachery and deceit." He called his son’s death “a criminal act carried out by the Israeli occupation” and warned, “They (Israelis) will continue until destroying the whole world.”

Muhammad Abu Ubaid, a colleague and Al-Alam TV correspondent in Gaza, remembered Wadi for his humanitarian work. “He may not be known to everyone, but the poor and afflicted know him well, because he devoted his time to assisting them,” he said. Abu Ubaid added that Wadi had shared plans to raise his young son, whom he described as his entire world. “We had an appointment today at Nasser Hospital (in Khan Younis), but I found out he had been martyred,” he said tearfully, lamenting that “the world is silent and watching, and the (Israeli) occupation continues to kill us and kill journalists despite the agreement.”

Gaza’s Government Media Office stated that Wadi’s death raised the number of Palestinian journalists killed by Israel since October 2023 to 257. It condemned Israel’s “systematic attacks and assassination of Palestinian journalists” and held Tel Aviv and the US, UK, Germany, and France “fully responsible for committing these heinous and brutal crimes.” The office urged the international community and press organizations worldwide to “condemn the Israeli occupation’s crimes.”

Despite repeated appeals from international media institutions to halt attacks on journalists, Israel has continued such operations, which Palestinians view as attempts to conceal atrocities in Gaza.

The ceasefire, which came into effect on Oct. 10 under Trump’s Gaza plan, ended two years of intense Israeli attacks that have killed more than 70,000 Palestinians and injured over 171,000, mostly women and children. However, Israel has repeatedly violated the agreement by firing on Palestinian civilians in areas outside its control, while Hamas has pledged full compliance and urged US pressure on Israel.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, since the ceasefire began, at least 356 Palestinians have been killed and over 900 injured in Israeli attacks.
